About the bay
One bay, one shaper, since 2016
Kai "Diddo" Echeverria opened the bay in 2016 with a planer, a stack of blanks, and a stubborn idea: boards for Monterey Bay should be built for Monterey Bay.
01Where we are
The shaping room is Bay C at 2541 Mission St Ext in Santa Cruz, a short drive from Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point. The business is Diddo Surfboard Shaping & Hydrodynamics LLC, and the name on the door is Diddo Custom Surfboards. Kai shapes, glasses, and finishes every board in this one room.
Visits are by appointment. Send a note first, and bring the wetsuit you actually surf in, because it tells us more than a spreadsheet and lets us check how your shoulders move.
The bay is small on purpose. There is room for a few boards on the racks, a shaping stand, a glassing table, and a vacuum pump, and that is the whole operation. When you come in, you are talking to the person who will hold the planer.
02How an order moves
It begins with a conversation: what you ride now, what you wish it did, and where you surf. Kai holds a foam template against your hips, reads your numbers through the calculator on the homepage, and sketches the outline with you.
Then the blank is cut and shaped by hand, the bottom contour and rails are refined, and fin boxes are set to the cant and toe-in you agreed on. The board is glassed and vacuum-bagged in S-glass, sanded, polished, and checked against the order card before it leaves. Most boards take ten to fourteen weeks from signed template to pickup, and we will tell you if the schedule moves.
You will get a photo of the board when the shape is done and another once it is glassed. If something looks different from what you pictured, that is the moment to say so, before the resin goes on.
03What we build, and what we do not
We build custom boards for cold water: pointbreak thrusters, twin-keel fish, step-decks, quads, and big-swell step-ups, all sized to a rider in a wetsuit. We do repairs on boards we have built and on others when we have room.
We do not run a stock line, ship containers of production boards, or sell surfboards on consignment. If you want one shaped to a catalog size, there are good shops that do that. If you want your board shaped to your own numbers, write to us.
04Why the physics
People ask why a surfboard shop writes about Coandă attachment, Reynolds numbers, and swell refraction. The answer is that the numbers make for better boards and better conversations. If we can explain why a vee is a quarter inch deep, you can tell us whether it felt right, and the next board gets closer.
Everything on this site comes from that habit of writing the reasons down, and of treating rider feedback as data rather than as a verdict on the shaper. The calculator, the diagrams, and the four technical pages are the same notes we use at the bench, written up for riders.
Kai keeps a handwritten log of tides, periods, and wind next to the notes on every board, so a customer who returns for a second shape can say what the first one did on which day. The log is the real reference library of the bay, and it is why repeat orders tend to land closer than first ones.
05Say hello
Write to Kai at kai@diddosurf.com for a custom order, or to the bay at shapingbay@diddosurf.com for repairs, visits, and everything else. Tell us your height, your weight, your suit, and the wave you chase, and we will take it from there.
